These Shi Zen mindfulness candles are a beautiful and ancient way of practicing mindfulness.
This set includes:
- Brass "shokudai" candle stand and stone plate
- Box of 10 10-minute candles
- Box of 10 20-minute candles
- Box of 10 30-minute candles
The candles are used as a timer for meditation and other mindful activities, allowing you to keep your devices turned off and your mind focused in the present moment.
The original brass candle stand is handmade by a workshop in Tsubame-sanjo, Niigata prefecture, and is designed to allow the candles to burn completely.
The candles are made from a precious natural Japanese wax called "mokuro", which is pressed from the drupes of the Japanese "haze" tree.
3 unique features of these candles:
-Designed to burn for exactly 10, 20, or 30 minutes, making it a great alternative to a phone timer.
-Made by the only maker in Japan left that is carrying on the traditional wax-making method.
-Burns cleanly and completely, leaving only a bit of ash behind.
The candles are made by Honda Mokuro, a wax and candle maker in the seaside town of Shimabara, Nagasaki Prefecture.
Honda handles every single process of wax and candle making, in-house, including:
- Planting "haze" trees
- Harvesting the drupes of the trees
- Processing and extracting the natural wax from those drupes
- Making traditional Japanese candles.
In addition, they are now the only workshop left in all of Japan that makes "mokuro" wax with the traditional press method, extracting the wax without the use of chemicals.
Although the yield is only half of what it could be if they used chemicals, they do it this way because they believe in the importance of preserving tradition.
Using these traditional Japanese mindfulness candles helps to support and preserve this ancient tradition and practice.
